Montagu, Western Cape – Landscape, Obscure and Fine Art Photography Along Route 62

Nestled along the famous Route 62, on the western side of the Klein Karoo, Montagu is one of the Western Cape’s most visually striking small towns. Surrounded by rugged mountains, vineyards, and wide open skies, it offers a rich variety of photographic opportunities throughout the year.

Montagu is particularly well known for the dramatic rock formations of Cogmanskloof, the changing seasonal light, and its quiet, almost timeless atmosphere. Early mornings often bring soft mist and diffused light, while late afternoons create strong shadows and contrast across the landscape.

As a photographer, I’m less interested in documenting the town in a literal sense, and more drawn to the patterns, textures, and tonal contrasts found in the environment and architecture. Many of the images here lean toward abstraction or a painterly style, where mood and interpretation take precedence over realism.

Being colour-blind also influences the way I approach photography. I tend to focus more on composition, balance, and light rather than accurate colour representation, which often results in images that feel slightly removed from reality—closer to fine art than traditional landscape photography.

Montagu rewards patience. The best images for me are often found in the less obvious, more offbeat scenes. I have much more to experience; I’ve only lived here since January (2026).
