A few more ICM shots for the collection..

..most that I hadn’t got around to tinkering with yet, in post. A bit like finding some unopened birthday gifts, or 50 bucks in some jeans you haven’t worn for ages.. ;)

These were mostly taken at a time I was exploring the medium full-tilt. I love ICM, it’s a liberating way of creating emotive and impressionistic images. And forgiving, although extremely hit-and-miss; I probably delete 90 out of every 100 shots. One can also crop photos with more latitude than normally possible.

(Just to be clear, there’s nothing clear about ICM (Intentional Camera Movement). One can make subtle jiggles with the camera, in any way, for any length of exposure, use soft focus and/or a variable ND filter; it’s a constant experimentation. I learned a lot from the courses and books on impressionistic photography by Eva Polak.)

I can’t remember where, when or what this is.. probably a reflection in a shop window. In today’s world, it could conjure up a different connotation!

Surfers, on their endless quest.. Maybe the next bank is better, maybe..

A walking street in late-afternoon Cape Town, sunbeams filtering through the trees.

Same street early evening, when the lights slowly started flickering on, made to ‘pop’ in my own garish, colourblind way. I wrote an article about my colourblindness here..

Nearing the underbelly of town. It was more than once I had policemen warn me not to flash my camera around, taking me for an unsuspecting tourist. And wisely.. I was stalked on several occasions by opportunist muggers. Keep the eyes in the back of one’s head peeled!

The feeling of emptiness reminded me a bit of Hopper’s painting, Nighthawks.

Selfie on the shoreline..

A fisher couple, doing what fisher couples do..

To illustrate the ability to crop with abandon..

..without fear of too much noise and pixelation. This more minimalistic crop is my preference of the two.

Anyway, how’s this scorching quote on sunset photography by Annebella Pollen, writing for The Guardian, to deter one!

“Sunset photographs have a low cultural status: they are characterized as sentimental visual confectionery indicative of limited aesthetic vision and an undeveloped practice.”

Ouch, but I love it!

Sunset reflections onto Noordhoek lagoon.

Elderly couple in a reverie, sharing nothing other than the vision of the sun slowly setting, the colours slowly fading from the mountains in the distance from purple to a dull grey, and the warmth and comfort of the other’s hand.

Young lovers.

The Garden Court Victoria Junction Hotel, one rainy evening.

Heading out of town..

.. taking a few drive-by shootings..

Why it’s called Witsands..

After the devastating fire on Table Mountain, Rhodes Memorial was virtually all that was left unscathed. The iconic tearoom, a safe bet to take one’s parents, or out-of-town visitors, to enjoy a spectacular view of Cape Town over a cup of tea with scones & cream, was raised to the ground.

Olive branch extended.

..and fairy lights on an olive tree.

Weskus toemis.
