A Stormy Road Trip..

Heading out to Montagu from Cape Town via the airport, we could see the storm looming up ahead. No sooner had we got to Caledon than we found ourselves in the middle of a serious cloudburst, the likes of which I’d hardly ever experienced before, and persisted for much of the rest of the journey.

For once, I was in the passenger’s seat, so no need to break the law! I’ll post the pics in sequence. There are none in the storm, however, with zero visibility and failing light.

Electric storms used to be a rarity in Cape Town and the Western Cape, but are much more frequent these days. The lightning was impressive, and the rain very welcome.
By the time we reached Montagu, there was already flooding and road closures.

The defunct power station, minus the demolished landmark cooling towers.

The front-facing side of Langa on the N1, that the..

..government wants visitors to see.

But the b-side, a sea of dishes and illegal electricity connections, not so much.

This sign stuck out like one of those Windows Fatal Error messages that gives you an instant feeling of absolute dread when they suddenly appear on your laptop screen.

Minimalism at the airport. I’m happy I wasn’t flying in or out of CT that day!

My only request as passenger was to please keep the windscreen clean.

The electricity already hung heavy in the air.

The b&w version.

An indication of what lay ahead.

Shot through the driver’s window. We hit the beginning of the increasingly intense storm over Sir Lowry’s Pass, heading into Elgin. My last photo before we hit the rain.

Same photo, tighter crop.
