The Shelley Point Hotel Fire

One is hardly aware of this devastating scene in the middle of the Shelley Point golf estate, which one needs to access if one wants to visit the lighthouse or some surf spots. The hotel, positioned at the 1st tee-off of the golf course, in the middle of the estate, is now just a ghostly shell of its former glory.

On 2nd February 2024, over 200 hundred guests, enjoying their holiday, and many probably still exhausted from the New Year festivities, had to hurriedly evacuate, some with only the clothes they were wearing. The fire started in the kitchen, on a day there was a howling gale.

Unfortunately, it’s now fenced off, so I wasn’t able to explore further. These shots were mostly taken from on top of my bakkie, shooting over the fence.
